Certification Renewal Requirements
Why is refresher training required?
Under the Skills Development Act, machine operator certificates or licences are valid for two (2) years only. Refresher training is required to ensure operators remain competent, compliant, and safety aware.
When is refresher training mandatory?
Refresher training is compulsory if a certificate has been expired for 90 days or longer.
How long does refresher training take?
Refresher training typically takes one to two days, depending on:

Is renewal cheaper than full training?
Yes. Certificate and licence renewal costs are significantly lower than full training, with pricing varying by machine type and skill set.
Will I receive an operator card?
Yes. An Operator Card is issued upon successful certification or renewal and must be carried at all times while operating machinery.
Does this apply outside South Africa?
This policy applies within the Republic of South Africa, although many Southern African countries are adopting similar standards due to their focus on competence and safety.
